BABYLON FIVE - NARN AMBASSADOR G'KAR, INITIAL SCULPTURE FOR PROSTHETIC MASK - MOULDING DAMS

BABYLON FIVE - NARN AMBASSADOR G'KAR, INITIAL SCULPTURE FOR PROSTHETIC MASK - MOULDING DAMS

"How curious! I have this splitting headache and no idea how I got it...but I expect it's something to do with Mollari!" "

----------------------------------------------------

There are several different approaches to mould making.

In this case I simply cut into the plasticine and inserted thin cardboard held together with packing tape. I wouldn't use this method on a smooth skinned sculpture because it would distort the sculpture too much and create flash lines in the final appliance. G'Kar has so much detail and so many natural fold lines in the skin that it was acceptable provided I did a little retrosculpting in the final moulds.

Otherwise I would have used dams made from clay or plasticine laid directly on the surface of the sculpture.

This is a six piece mould, the number of pieces being just about the minimum I could get away with and still easily remove the plaster mould pieces from the sculpture without having to dig out too much plasticine from the cavities.

The placement lines for the dams are planned to help eliminate major undercuts, which might lock the mould to the sculpture.

Yes, we do spell 'mould' that way in Australia...

And 'armour' is never 'armor'....

So there!
